Embarrassed By Your Ears? Otoplasty Could Be the Answer

Are you unhappy with the way your ears look? Do you wish you could do something to make them look different? If so, you may want to consider otoplasty: a surgical procedure that is also referred to as “ear pinning.” By changing the look of your ears, you can change the look of your whole face.
With two locations in New York, Dr. Robert A. Guida is an experienced plastic surgeon who can help you develop the ears that will make your face shine.
What is otoplasty?
Otoplasty is a brief cosmetic surgical procedure where your doctor will make your ears smaller, flatter, or of different proportions, depending on what your wants and needs may be. Patients most commonly want to have their ears moved closer to their heads so they don’t protrude as much.
How the procedure works
There are a few different techniques for otoplasty, so Dr. Guida will choose the one that suits your needs best. He can excise extra skin or cartilage on the back of your ears or re-sculpt them if you feel they are too big. Your ears will then be sutured to secure them in the ideal place. You will be under anesthesia during this process.
Any scars that form after the procedure will be small and will only show on the backs of the ears, so you — and everyone else — won’t notice them at all.
Recovering after otoplasty
The recovery process after otoplasty is very simple. For the first day post-surgery, you’ll be required to wear a special compression garment around your ears to protect them. Afterward, you’ll be given a protective headband to wear for anywhere up to a week. The swelling will decrease after the first few days, and you should be able to resume your normal life within a week or so.
Who benefits from otoplasty?
This procedure is ideal for anyone who has insecurity about the appearance of their ears. It’s often done in children, but it’s ideal for people of all ages. The ears reach their full size by the age of four, so this surgery can be done on anyone at that age or older.
