If you suffer from worry lines, crow’s feet and deep creases in the forehead, there’s a new FDA-approved non-surgical treatment that can help take years off your appearance and leave you looking relaxed and refreshed. Dysport® works in much the same way as BOTOX® Cosmetic by blocking nerve signals to temporarily relax the facial muscles that cause dynamic wrinkling in the forehead and around the eyes. When the facial muscles are relaxed, deep lines and wrinkles are softened dramatically, and may even disappear completely. Dysport® can achieve amazing results that typically last between 3 and 6 months, all without the need for surgery, anesthesia or downtime.
Dysport® has been approved for cosmetic purposes in the United States since April 2009, and it has enjoyed a long track record for safety and success around the world. First introduced in 1991 to treat movement disorders and muscle spasms, Dysport® is currently used in more than 75 countries worldwide.
Best Candidates for Dysport®
In some patients, repeated contraction of facial muscles over the years can result in deeply etched lines and creases that make them appear permanently worried, stressed, or even angry. These lines are known as “dynamic” wrinkles because they are caused by active muscle contractions. Dysport® works to relax the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles, helping to smooth or eliminate pronounced lines around the forehead, eyes and mouth. Dysport® is particularly effective in treating moderate to severe vertical lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines), horizontal worry lines in the brow, laugh lines around the eyes, and tiny vertical stress lines around the mouth.
Advantages of Dysport®
Dysport® injections are a simple, safe and effective way to smooth facial lines and wrinkles, giving patients a more youthful and refreshed appearance without surgery. Treatments take only 15 minutes and can be done right in Dr. Guida’s offices, without the need for anesthesia or pain medication. After treatment, patients can return to their normal activities immediately.
How is Dysport® administered?
Dr. Guida administers Dysport® injections in the office. Typically, patients report only minimal discomfort from Dysport® treatments, so a local anesthetic is not necessary. Occasionally, Dr. Guida may suggest a topical numbing cream for particularly sensitive patients. Dysport® is injected into targeted muscles on the face through a very tiny needle. During the injections, patients may feel slight discomfort for approximately 5 seconds as the Dysport® is injected. Dr. Guida uses ice packs on the face to help minimize discomfort and decrease the chance for bruising.
What can I expect after Dysport® treatment?
Once the treatment is completed, patients are able to return to work or other activities immediately. There’s no need to wait for sedatives or anesthesia to wear off, so patients can drive themselves home. Dr. Guida will recommend that patients refrain from lying down for 3 to 4 hours following treatment. Results will be noticeable within 2 to 8 days after treatment, with maximum effects noted after 2 weeks. The benefits typically last from 3 to 6 months, with most patients needing 2 to 3 treatments per year to maintain the best results. For some patients, a touch-up treatment may be necessary 1 to 2 weeks after the initial treatment.
Dr. Guida appreciates and encourages patient feedback after Dysport® treatments. This helps him to understand your unique response so that he can customize your future treatments, allowing for the best results possible. Anatomy varies among patients, as do responses to medication. A customized approach to Dysport® treatments yields far superior results.
How is Dysport® different from BOTOX® Cosmetic?
Dysport® uses a modified form of botulinum toxin Type A, the same active ingredient that is in BOTOX® Cosmetic, however there are slight differences in dosage strengths and injection techniques. Dr. Guida will answer any questions you have so you can make the best choice for your individual situation.
Are there any disadvantages or long-term side effects to Dysport® treatments?
Dysport® has been used extensively worldwide for nearly 20 years. While every cosmetic procedure carries some risk and uncertainty, Dysport® treatment is normally safe and effective when administered by a qualified physician experienced with facial anatomy. Though extremely uncommon, if too much Dysport® is injected into an area, mild asymmetry or a droopy eyelid may occur. This effect is temporary and fades over a period of several weeks to months. Dr. Guida will discuss all the safety information about Dysport® and answer any questions you have about potential side effects before your treatment.
What results can I expect after Dysport® treatment?
With Dysport®, you can expect outstanding results that last from 3 to 6 months. Dysport® can help smooth deep facial lines and creases in the forehead and between the eyebrows, while improving the appearance of laugh lines and crow’s feet around the eyes. Dysport® helps to soften and fill in dynamic wrinkles and lines caused by the contraction of facial muscles. Dysport® does not treat “static” wrinkles that are present when the face is at rest. Cosmetic fillers such as Restylane® and Juvéderm® work well to treat static lines. Dysport® does not tighten skin or mimic the results of facial surgical procedures.
Can Dysport® be used at the same time as cosmetic fillers?
Absolutely. Dr. Guida often uses Dysport® in conjunction with cosmetic fillers such as Restylane® and Juvéderm®. While Dysport® temporarily relaxes the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles, cosmetic fillers work to smooth static wrinkles. Using the two together, patients can achieve a more relaxed, youthful and refreshed appearance. Dysport® can also be used together with other cosmetic surgical procedures. Dr. Guida will discuss which treatments may help you to achieve the results you are seeking.
