BOTOX® Cosmetic is one of the most commonly used cosmetic treatments performed in the world – and the reason is because it works amazingly well. Dr. Guida finds that BOTOX® Cosmetic can make cosmetic improvements on the face that plastic surgery, lasers, or chemical peels, could never achieve. The deep, horizontal “worry” lines of the forehead, the vertical grooves between the eyebrows when one frowns, and severe “crow’s feet” around the corners of the eyes can be softened dramatically, and in some cases, totally eliminated by BOTOX® Cosmetic. And it is safe, predictable, and has stood the test of time. Yes, it is also temporary, lasting anywhere from 3-6 months, but the more one uses it, the weaker the muscles get, and less is needed over time.
In terms of the history BOTOX® Cosmetic, it was developed for medical use and then approved by the FDA for the treatment of uncontrollable eyelid spasms in 1992. Since this time, BOTOX® Cosmetic has been used successfully to treat excess sweating, migraine headaches and muscle spasms and constrictions. It was then inadvertently noticed to have excellent applications in cosmetic facial rejuvenation by making facial lines disappear. Since then, Dr. Guida and doctors around the world have been using BOTOX® Cosmetic for these purposes.
Best Candidates For BOTOX® Cosmetic
BOTOX® Cosmetic is most popular and successful in treating horizontal lines in the forehead, the horizontal “laugh lines” around the corners of the eyes commonly called “crow’s feet”, and the deep vertical lines between the eyebrow. It can also be used for treatment to the vertical muscle bands or cords of the neck and the tiny vertical lines around the mouth. These lines are referred to as “dynamic wrinkles”, as they require a muscle contraction to appear. This is opposed to “static wrinkles”, which are lines on the face that appear at rest.
Advantages Of BOTOX® Cosmetic
These deep lines of the forehead, between the eyes, and the crow’s feet, cause the face to look tired, angry, mean, or worried. BOTOX® Cosmetic softens, and often eliminates, these deep lines. One treatment of BOTOX® Cosmetic can soften the appearance, giving a more youthful, relaxed, and refreshed look – with no downtime and no surgery.
The treatment takes 15 minutes or so and a patient can return to work or social functions comfortably after the treatment. BOTOX® Cosmetic is extremely safe and effective.
BOTOX® for Excessive Sweating (Hyperhydrosis)
Hyperhidrosis is a rare condition that causes excessive sweating on the hands, feet, armpits, face and genital area, or all over the entire body. The cause of this condition is unknown, although it often runs in families and begins during childhood.
Patients with hyperhidrosis may sweat all over their body or in certain areas. Their skin may become white and wrinkled or red and irritated as a result of the constant moisture, and may develop an odor as well. Living with hyperhidrosis often causes patients to feel embarrassed, awkward and self-conscious, especially during social situations.
Does Botox® work to decrease excess sweating?
BOTOX® is FDA-approved for severe underarm sweating when topical agents don’t work. BOTOX® treatment helps control this condition by temporarily blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. When the sweat glands don’t receive chemical signals, the severe sweating stops.
How effective is Botox® for treating excess sweating?
BOTOX® treatment is very effective. One clinical study involved 322 patients with severe underarm sweating.
57 out of 104 BOTOX® treated patients (55%) achieved an effective response compared to only 6 out of 108 treated without BOTOX® (6%).
84 out of 104 BOTOX®, treated patients (81%) achieved a greater than 50% reduction in sweating-compared to only 44 out of 108 treated without BOTOX® (41%).
How is the BOTOX® treatment performed?
A small volume of BOTOX® solution is injected into the affected underarm area through a very fine needle. The needle is placed just under the skin, so you may experience some injection- related discomfort. You will receive multiple injections based on Dr. Guida’s assessment of the area that needs to be treated.
When will I see results from my BOTOX® treatment?
You should notice a significant reduction in underarm sweating within four weeks of your first treatment There is a possibility that some sweat glands may be missed, and you may continue to experience some sweating from the untreated areas. If you do not see a significant reduction in sweating, you should let Dr. Guida know and a follow up visit will be needed.
How long do the results of the BOTOX® treatment last?
In a recent clinical study, the median duration of response in BOTOX® patients was 201 days or 6.7 months (i.e. half of the patients had a treatment duration of at least 201 days or 6.7 months). It is not a cure; your symptoms will return gradually, and you will know when the time is right for another treatment. Dr. Guida will recommend a treatment strategy to ensure that you receive the best possible results with BOTOX® treatment.
What happens if I decide not to continue with the treatments?
If you decide not to have further treatment, there will be no lasting change, in the treated areas. The effects of BOTOX® treatment will gradually wear off, and your underarm sweating will resume.
How can I know if BOTOX® for excess sweating is safe for me?
Dr. Guida can help you decide if BOTOX® treatment is right for you. In order to make the right treatment decision, Dr. Guida will need to know if you ever had BOTOX® before and if you are allergic to BOTOX®; if you have a neuromuscular disease such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, motor neuropathy, myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome; if you have an infection at the intended site of injection, if you are taking antibiotics or other drugs, such as curare, that may interfere with neuromuscular transmission, and if you are being treated with any medications.
